Stillwater Montana Community Info

Stillwater County, in south central Montana, has terrific opportunities for those who live in it and those who would like to visit. Columbus, the County Seat, sits in the center of Stillwater County. I-90, Highway 78 and the Rapelje Road, major roads, all meet at Columbus.

Whether it is fishing the rivers and streams, floating the Yellowstone and Stillwater Rivers, hunting in the Beartooth Mountains, biking from Rapelje, the Running of the Sheep in Reed Point, Art Walks in Absarokee, or any other of the activities, Stillwater County is the place to be.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,117 people, 5,234 households, and 3,883 families residing in the county. The population density was 5 people per square mile (2/km²). There were 3,947 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.78% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 2.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 29.7% were of German, 11.8% Norwegian, 10.8% English, 10.6% Irish and 6.8% American ancestry according to Census 2010.

Climate

The average monthly temperatures in Stillwater County range from around 20 degrees in the winter to more than 60 degrees in the summer, depending on elevation. Columbus, the county seat, averages 67 in the summer months and 29 degrees in the winter. The sun shines year round with white winters, colorful falls and beautiful springs.

Location

Columbus is located along the Yellowstone River, 40 miles west of Billings, 100 miles east of Bozeman and 130 miles north of Yellowstone Park.

Population

As of the 2011 U.S. Census, the population of Stillwater County was 9,131. Columbus is the largest incorporated town with a population of 1,891.

Medical

Medical clinics are located in Absarokee and Columbus, as well as dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, a convalescent home, assisted living centers and ambulances throughout the county. In the fall of 2012, the Stillwater Billings Clinic in Columbus completed construction, offering expanded medical services including radiology, physical therapy and more.

Agriculture

Comprised of prairie farmland to the north and mountains to the south, Stillwater County is bisected by fertile river valleys. Cattle, sheep, alfalfa and grass hay are some of the biggest operations/crops. Also produced is barley, oats and corn on dry and irrigated land.
